Regionals!

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:23 pm by glforensics

~Regionals has been set for April 19th (that’s a Saturday) at Dexter High School (the same place we had Districts). The Bus will leave at 5:50 AM from the High School. All team members are welcome, but I must know if you plan to come since the District may be giving us a van rather than a bus due to our small numbers and there is (obviously) limited seating. Please let me know asap.

~Our Region has alot of our best competitors (ie Portage and Walled Lake) so we all need to make sure we are continuing to polish, polish, polish!!!

~Because of Conferences next week there will be no practice on Thurs and Fri, BUT I will be in on Tues. I would like to see as many of you as possible that day because the following week is Spring Break.

~I am thinking about holding a practice down on the Gazebo on the island over break (since we can’t get into the school) if the weather permits - let me know if you’re interested.

~The week after break, I will hold practice on Tues, Thurs and Fri  since THAT SATURDAY will be the competition.

~I also need to know your interest in having a “Parent Night/Dessert Theatre” of sorts where we could all perform for each other and any one else that would like to see you, but  wasn’t able to come to the meets (friends, family etc). Again, you’ll need to let me know about interest and your end of the year schedule.

~I also want to thank you all for all the work that you’ve put in this season. I know that the timing has been against us (with snow days and what not) but your dedication means alot.

Contact me if you have questions or concerns,

Laura

Districts

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:56 pm by glforensics

GOOD JOB to everyone who went to Districts this past Wednesday. I was incredibly proud of you -even if it was a small tournament. Congratulations go out to Liz Asman,Kelly Dunnigan, Kevin Fox, Andrew Sass, and Angel Villarreal who will all be advancing to the Regional tournament.

I anticipate regionals to be held the week after spring break, but don’t have any further details than that. Practices will continue to be held next week on Thurs and Fri and if anyone wants to practice over spring break (i can hear you laughing) let me know and we can try to set something up. Remember, although our District was small, our region has many of the big players (like both Portage schools, Mattawan, etc) so you will need to be razor sharp.

I would like to also thank you for being such good ’sports’ at the tournament. You were all well behaved and respectful of the school and other competitors which makes all the difference in the end.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns,

Ms C

Last Invitational Tournament

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:41 am by glforensics

Hello Again,

The last invitational tournament of the season is this Saturday, March 8th.  The bus is leaving at 5:30am for HH Dow High School in Midland.  Right now I have Kevin, Angel, Maaphio, and Liz competing. Kelly and Taylor? Where have you been! I haven’t  even heard from either one of you in 2 weeks. Kelly, I’m going to put you down to compete unless you contact me and tell me otherwise. If you want to compete and your name is not listed please contact me ASAP.

District Competition will be our next tournament on the 19th. You will more than likely end up missing your last class hour of the day. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL CLASS WORK AND HOMEWORK MISSED. Right now, I anticipate ALL forensics team members participating in this competition. If you CAN NOT make it, please contact me ASAP.

Thats it for now, I will be in again this week for practice.

Hokey-Dokey: This is what we got.

~Tournament next Saturday the 23rd at Frankenmuth. BUS LEAVES AT 5:30 AM -don’t be late! I have Andrew, Angel, Kelly, and Taylor competing.  Maafio and Liz, you should be coming to observe so that we can get you guys competing ASAP. Please let me know if you CAN’T make it. Maafio I am missing both your bus slip and parent letter. Liz I am missing your bus slip and $5 activity fee. The parent letter can be found under the ‘pages’ on this website. You can ask Mrs AY for a bus slip.

~ I am adding another tournament on March 8th in Midland at H.H. Dow High School. I think alot of you are going to need this, BUT I have to know that people are interested in order to go. Sheila and Jeni - I may you guys to judge.

~The next tournament is March 1st at Grand Rapids Christian High School, Sheila and Jeni I may need you guys to judge.

~Even if you’re not sure if you’re going to be able to afford going to Mackinac Island, please sign up outside Mrs AY’s room so that we know what kind of interest we have, and therefore can figure out what kind of financial aid we can offer. Kelly, Remind me to give you a receipt for your deposit that you  gave me on Thurs.
~I will holding practice this coming Tues day the 19th after school, along with practice on Thurs and Fri. If you are competing I would really like you to push to memorize this weekend so that next week we can work on blocking (ideally having two practices - one to hash out blocking, one to try and polish)

~It looks like districts will be held around March 19th. Reminder, b/c this is a weekday tournament, you will probably be missing the last hour of the school day. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure your 6th hour teacher is aware of this (once a date/time has been set in stone) and to see that you are getting whatever work is being missed that day and that there is no bad vibes going on.

Alrighty, I think thats about it. As always, if you have ANY questions, comment, or really good jokes, feel free to contact me either through email (chamb202@msu.edu), facebook, cell, or leave a note with Mrs AY.

Butterflies and lollipops,

Ms C

Missed Meeting

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:24 pm by glforensics

Hey all,

As much as I am sure you enjoyed the snow day, I have to tell you that it was not a good thing for Forensics. First of all, NO ONE came in during the other days to practice which means that I didn’t see ANY of you last week for practice. That is not a good thing since there is a tournament this week and another one close on its heels. Below you’ll find the information.

1) Tuesday practices are off the books. No one is showing up and I am severely adding to global warming by driving all the way across town. I am more than happy to hold a practice on Tuesday, but it needs to be set-up in advance. Also, I will once again say that you can not ALL come in on Fridays…which makes me wonder where my normal Thursday people were last week….(cough cough)

2) THERE IS A MEET THIS WEEKEND. All of you should be attending, either in observation or competition, unless you have spoken with me previously. You can’t compete unless you observe. You may be saying “Ms C! I have no idea what I need to do/be/bring/ahhhhh!” No worries, I will tell you now:

A) The bus leaves at 6am. Be there at 5:50.

B) The bus is cold and the ride is long. Bring a pillow and blanket so you can sleep in some form of comfort. These you will be able to leave on the bus. You might also want to bring breakfast for later. Remember-only capped, non-glass bottles on the bus.

C) You will need to bring money or pack food for lunch (available at the school) AND dinner (usually fast food on the way home). You might also want to brink a water bottle.

D) You will need to bring something to do in the ‘down’ times between events. Homework, cards, book….you get the picture. Remember you will want to bring things that you can carry with you easily. Also, do not bring anything that might be tempting for someone else to take home (laptops, ipods, etc).

E) It will be a long day. Those of you who are not competing can dress in what you would normally wear to school (jeans, t’s ect). I would suggest layering. Remember, even as an observer you are a representative of GLHS. Competitors are expected to dress accordingly(and bring a writing utensil!). I have the following students competing: Angel, Taylor Nichols, Kelly.

F) Hopefully the bus will leave around 7pm putting us home around 9pm. However, I cannot promise anything.  You will be able to call 20minutes out from the HS so that your rides will be there and waiting for you when we arrive (hint hint) Do not make plans for that evening.

G) Remember you will not be able to get into the school building at anytime

H) All school rules still apply even though we are off-campus

3) It looks like the cost of the Mackinac Island Tournament will be around $350-400. We are still negotiating some figures. A $50 DEPOSIT IS DUE FEB 14th. More information will be forthcoming

4) I will reschedule another meeting sometime next week.  At that time, Angel will have information about Tshirts.

5) All of you, and I mean ALL, need to be memorized after this week. No excuses. Practices are not productive when you are not memorized. You do NOT need to have blocking-we can work on that together. Memorizing is sometimes slow and painful, but it is something that must be done. You can not compete without being memorized. Those who fail will feel my wrath.

Practices will be on Thursday and Friday this week. Come prepared to show me progress. You had a whooooooole snow day to ‘advance in your studies’.

If you have ANY questions, comments, concerns, PLEASE contact me. Email, facebook, whatever it takes. I can’t help if I don’t know.

See you this week,

Ms C

Already?

Hey all,

I don’t know about you guys, but this winter break FLEW by and here we are ready to start again. Practices will begin next week 1/7/08 and below are your options. Remember: You do NOT need to attend every practice, but I need to see you once a week to see the progress you are making at home. Also, you can not all come in on Fridays or I will never be able to get to everyone. Practice will run no later than 5pm.

PS Don’t forget to look at the tournament schedule and figure out which ones you will be attending. The first one in February all new people are required to attended to observe. Chances are we will be adding tournaments in March.

PRACTICE DAYS ARE TUESDAYS, THURSDAYS, and FRIDAYS after school in Mrs A-Y’s room.

wrap up

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:01 pm by glforensics

Hey everyone!

I hope that you are enjoying your break! Don’t forget in all your sugar induced comatose time that there are a few things you should be doing for when practices start back up in January.

First: Make copies of your script so that you have something that you can mark on and something that I can look at when we’re working together

Second: Memorize! It is important! The sooner you are memorized the sooner we can begin to work on vocal technique and blocking…otherwise I just waste practice time telling you you need to memorize

Third: There is no Henry Ford tournament this year which means as of right now, there is no January tournament. This means that all of you have to be that much more prepared come February so that you can hit the ground running!

Fourth: Broadcasters; Your copies are posted under pages, download them and practice cutting with in a 25 minute time frame rather than 30. If you can train yourself to prep in this time frame then during competition you will have 5 extra minutes to play with for introduction-catchers, getting to your room or timing yourself. Also, don’t forget to keep up on the news.

Fifth: I MUST HAVE YOUR ACTIVITIES FEES! I AM NOT KIDDING!!! I need to turn these in when school gets back. I will start hunting you down…….

Alright, thats about it….for now (evil laugh)

As soon as I know I will get a practice schedule up for the spring.

Enjoy sleeping in!

December

Thanks to everyone for showing up to the meeting yesterday, it was really great to see all your faces again ;-)

Here are some of the important things to remember from the meeting:

~By next week, you need to have a script. Copies of the script need to be made-1 for you to look at and 1 for me to look at. Those of you who already have scripts, you need to cut those scripts down so that they are within a 5-8 minute time frame.

~Practices are on Weds and Fri after school. You must attend one of these practices.

~We are still accepting designs for our T-shirts this year.

~What are we going to do about Fundraising for Mackinaw? We will need to come to a conclusion by next week Wednesday.

~I still need paperwork and $5 activity fee from some of you, please be timely about that.

This should be a really great season. See you next week!

Update

I have posted the 2008 tournament schedule. Please look it over. All students should attempt to compete at least twice during the season. I will also have hard copies available at Friday’s meeting. It might also be helpful if you went over the parent letter at this time too. You can find it under the ‘pages’ heading here if you need another copy.

See you next week (with your scripts!)

Ah-hem

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:27 pm by glforensics

Sooooo…….. (looks around at empty classroom)
You guys have not been seen! Just because there is no school on Fridays does not mean that you can’t come in on Wednesdays you know. I realize that life has been hectic for many of you (including me), and there have been alot of Fridays with no school, but now that the musical is done this weekend, I want everyone to come in Friday the 30th so that we can regroup. YOU NEED TO HAVE A SCRIPT TO SHOW ME. That gives you all of Thanksgiving weekend to find one.
I also want to talk about fundraising. Your first payment for Mackinaw is going to be coming up in January. I won’t rehash how that last round of cotton candy sales went, as many of you know……Remember I am not responsible for You raising money to go on the trip. Please also remember that many of you still owe me forms and your $5 activity fee. Please turn those in asap.
What I am responsible for though is getting you forensicators a tournament schedule for the spring, which I promise I will have for you on 11/30 so that you can put in your time-off requests at work etc. Remember, everyone who has never competed before is REQUIRED to attend the first tournament to observe. All team members should also compete at least twice.

Hope you all have a happy TurkeyDay :-D
Ms. C
